What Is The Tucson Old Time Music Circle?
I became interested in the "Old Time" music by listening to my brother play and sing it in the 1970's. I had always had an interest in "folk music" and had played guitar and sang it since the late 1950's, but had not been exposed to the type he played. In the late 1990's I started learning to play the 5-string banjo and the tunes associated with the Appalachian/Southern Mountains of the U.S.
The old players are almost all gone, and the first generation of people who helped to revive it in the '60s is fading. I want to keep this history alive, and this is one way to do it.
The idea behind this get together is to provide an outlet for Old Time musicians to gather and share their love of this music. Anybody is welcome to come by and share their music, or just listen to the old tunes. Hopefully, anybody with an interest in this music will be encouraged to learn, teach or just share with others.
The Tucson Old Time Music Circle (TOTMC) is made up of people who are interested in playing and preserving the music that once was commonly played by folk in their own homes and get togethers before radio and recordings came into widespread use.
